A diner found a fly in his hotpot at the Suki-Ya restaurant in Heartland Mall Kovan on Sept 6.

Stomper Spooky shared photos of the insect he removed from the broth while having dinner with his son.

"After almost finishing eating, I discovered this extra ingredient in my soup," recounted the Stomper.

"So I approached a staff member to inform her about the extra ingredient. However, she never even apologised and tried to brush it off by saying 'the fly' might have flown in when I was eating and offered to change it to a new soup.

"But I rejected the offer as we were almost done and I didn't really see any flies around."

After paying the $39.07 bill, the diner approached another staff member.

"I informed her about the flies and asked her to tell the kitchen staff to be more careful, said the Stomper.

"However, she also tried to brush it off by saying their kitchen got no flies.

"So if the restaurant and kitchen got no flies, then the flies must have come from the central kitchen? Then everyone that goes to any branch better check the soup first before eating."

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Suki-Ya said the Japanese shabu-shabu restaurant chain takes such matters seriously and looked into the incident.

"From our understanding, as soon as our staff was informed about the presence of a fly in the soup, an immediate offer was made to replace it with a fresh pot," said the spokesperson.

"Unfortunately, this was declined by the diner as they were nearing the end of their meal.

"As our restaurants operate with an open-concept layout, there are occasional instances where a fly may enter despite our stringent hygiene and housekeeping practices. It is rare for a fly to end up in the soup, but we recognise how unpleasant this experience must have been for the diner.

"We will also continue to reinforce with our team the importance of handling such situations with greater sensitivity and care."

The spokesperson added: "As a gesture of our sincerity, we would love to extend a $50 Creative Eateries dining voucher to the customer as service recovery.

"We remain committed to upholding high standards of food safety and service, and we sincerely regret any disappointment this incident may have caused."
