Kampong spirit or safety first?

Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council has given a resident a deadline to remove a "smoking and beering corner" at a Bukit Panjang block.

Stomper W shared photos of a table, chairs and a patio umbrella set up among the many potted plants on the ground floor of Block 473 Segar Road.

There was also a painting of galloping horses to add to the ambience.

He described the collection of outdoor furniture as "our mini Sentosa Palawan Beach smoking and beering corner" and said that it had been there for years.

The photos were taken on Sept 16.

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council said on Sept 20: "Our property team and community volunteers have been engaging the resident.

"We have advised the resident to remove the setup at the common areas by Oct 6."

She added that the town council has been stepping up public education against illegal fixtures and common area clutter to promote neighbourliness.

"The town council would also like to reiterate that the safety of our residents remains as our topmost priority," said the spokesperson.

"Most importantly, we would like to appeal to all residents for their mutual help, in maintaining a clear and safe pathway at the common areas. Clear passageways and communal paths are essential and critical routes especially in times of emergencies."
