Tourist slams 'rude' Singapore cabby who changes tone when she says she's from Japan
A Japanese TikToker was left shocked and upset after a taxi driver's rude behaviour and 'racist' comments during a ride to Changi Airport.
@crazyjapanese_ttv shared on TikTok that she went to a taxi stand to get a ride to the airport with her luggage, preparing to head back to Japan.
She described it as "one of the worst experiences" she has had while in Singapore.
She politely asked the driver if she could get into the taxi but was surprised when the driver reportedly pointed his finger and told her to open the boot and load her luggage herself, adding, "I'm not going to help you".
Shocked by the rude response, the passenger then asked the driver if he accepted credit card payments, as she didn't have cash.
The driver, however, continued to shout "Get in! Get in!" without answering the question.
Confused, the passenger switched to Chinese and said goodbye to her friend before getting into the cab.
She was offended when the driver said: "You guys are from China."
"What a racist!" she remarked.
When the passenger mentioned she was from Japan, she said the driver's attitude changed 180 degrees', and he suddenly treated her with much more respect: "He treated me like a queen."
The TikToker went on to emphasise that not all Japanese people are polite and that her friends and students from China are far more courteous than some Japanese people.
"One of the most stupid people in this world is those who generalise," she said.
The video has since garnered over 130,000 views.
In the comments, some Singaporeans sympathised and agreed that most taxi drivers will not help passengers with their luggage.
"They don't even help with your stroller when you're alone and carrying a baby," said a commenter.
Others advised her to report the incident to the taxi company: "It's because of drivers like him that gives Singapore a bad name."
Another netizen said: "Unwittingly, the creator is also generalising by making this video of this taxi driver. You cannot say every driver is similar."
The TikToker apologised if the user felt offended and said: "Please don't get me wrong, bro."
