TikToker catches 2 men fishing illegally at Sungei Punggol, netizens defend them: 'Don't kaypoh'
What a catch - of a different kind.
Two men were caught on camera fishing at Sungei Punggol near a "no fishing" sign at the Punggol Park Connector under Sengkang West Way viaduct on Dec 15 morning.
A Stomper alerted Stomp to a video of the incident posted on TikTok by Mr Tan Kim Pong. It shows the PUB sign that said the fine for fishing there was up to $3,000.
Mr Tan wrote sarcastically in the caption: "Laws are made to be broken."
The video has more than 35,000 views.
Netizens defended the fishermen.
One commented: "Tell us a reason that fishing must be against law."
Mr Tan replied: "Fishing is allowed in certain parts of our reservoirs and waterways, but outside these designated areas fishing becomes illegal."
Another commenter ranted: "That's the BIGGEST SPORT PROBLEM in Singapore!!!! The Government does NOT encourage fishing! We have no place to go!!!! How many ponds do we have? How many areas we can fish and give ourselves a break!
"Fishing is worldwide sport available in every country of the world. The parameters of Singapore's waters have been very restrictive and there are not many areas where you can cast out to the sea.
"The Government promotes arts and music. Give these anglers space to fish. The parameters of SG are fenced and are restricted leaving not many spaces for people to take a break.
"How do you comprehend to raise this question? It is not about right or wrong. It's about people needing their space to fish.
"Outdoor sports is dead in SG. No fishing, no bikes and cars track circuits, no bicycle tracks, even East Coast chalets they shut people off for weekends break and gathering."
"Fishing is about going different places to make the sport fun."
Others said that fishing should be allowed as long as it's catch-and-release.
Another netizen commented: "Don't kaypoh. Just walk off. They don't disturb you, you don't disturb them"
Mr Tan also shared another video of the two fishermen on Instagram.
