A man and his friend were perplexed by the presence of unmarked suitcases padlocked to bicycle racks in Yishun.

Stomper Victor wrote to Stomp on Feb 26 to highlight the issue. "My friend and I noticed some luggage that was padlocked to bicycle parking lots around Yishun HDB (Housing Development Board) blocks."

According to Victor, the suitcases were chained to the bicycle racks at Blocks 674B Yishun Avenue 4 and 676B Yishun Ring Road.

He showed Stomp photos of four suitcases – two silver, one dark blue and one black – locked to various bicycle racks using bicycle locks.

These sights raised several questions in the Stomper's mind.

He asked: "Whose luggage are these? Why are they being padlocked to bicycle parking lots, turning our HDB void decks into a luggage storage space?"

Victor also expressed concerns that there may be "suspicious or dangerous" items in the suitcases, and clarified that his friend had reported the matter to the town council.

Town council to remove items after 'sufficient notice'

In response to Stomp's queries, a representative from Nee Soon Town Council said it is aware of the situation.

"We have put up advisory notices at the affected locations. We will also remove the items after sufficient notice is given, as the racks are designated strictly for bicycle parking and not for the locking of personal belongings," said the spokesperson.

The town council added that it appreciates the public's vigilance in reporting such cases, which helps to ensure that common areas remain safe and properly used.
