They are a common sight on the road — cyclists travelling in a group.

Motorists gripe about them, but are the cyclists doing anything wrong?

Stomper Wilson shared a video of one such group cycling along Pasir Ris Drive 3 on Jan 25.

"A group of around 10 bicycle riders were cycling in one full lane on the left towards Downtown East, causing inconvenience to cars," said Wilson.

"The traffic was quite heavy even on a Sunday morning. These cyclists should be fined for such behaviour."

Stomper Yan also shared photos of about 10 people on bicycles occupying the leftmost lane of Bukit Timah Road on the evening of Jan 26.

Are the cyclists breaking the law?

According to the Land Transport Authority, cyclists must:

  • Always ride as close as practicable to the far left edge of roads and allow traffic to overtake them safely.
  • Cycle in a single file on single-lane roads and during bus lane operational hours. (Otherwise, cycling two abreast is allowed.)
  • Keep to a maximum length of five bicycles when riding in groups, which means a maximum of five cyclists if riding in single file, or 10 cyclists if riding two abreast.

Cyclists who are caught flouting the cycling group size rule will be fined $150.
