Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.

Are modern parents spoiling and indulging their kids too much? Are they to blame for the lack of basic courtesy and respect these days?

Stomper Queen certainly thinks so, especially after her experience on the Downtown Line on Aug 23, at about 4.45pm.

Queen, who saw a young toddler lying down across multiple seats on the MRT train, said: "It's shocking how some parents these days are so ignorant about their child's behavior, thinking that everything their child does is acceptable.

"This mother allowed her son to sleep across MRT seats without a care, letting his dirty shoes repeatedly kick the passenger beside him.

"When the passenger politely said 'excuse me,' instead of correcting her son or showing the slightest apology, she simply gave a deadly stare, as if she had every right to inconvenience others. The passenger had no choice but to stand up because of her indifference.

"What made it worse was when another family with a young toddler took the seat. Even then, when the father politely said 'excuse me,' she responded with the same arrogant stare, showing zero respect or responsibility.

"At first, we empathised with the boy since he was young and thought perhaps he was tired. But very quickly it became clear that neither he nor his mother cared about the inconvenience caused to others.

"At one point, the boy even looked as if he was about to take up two seats just to lie fully across the chairs, showing a complete disregard for basic manners in public."

Queen is not the only one who has spotted unsavoury behaviour by kids (and their seemingly equally complicit parents) in public. Other Stompers have also shared similar incidents in the past, including:

Queen feels that this sheds light on a wider societal issue: "Parents like this are the reason why basic courtesy is disappearing. They enable their children's bad behavior and act as if the whole world should tolerate it.

"This kind of entitled mindset is unacceptable and makes the environment unpleasant for everyone around."
