A man is calling for stricter enforcement and better public awareness of the dangers of smoking in public spaces.

Stomper Mahesh told Stomp he has witnessed a growing trend of smokers lighting up near markets, parks, bus stops and other shared areas.

"It's disheartening to see that many people are forced to inhale smoke against their will," he said.

"This behaviour exposes children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory conditions to harmful second-hand smoke.

"Passive smoking has been proven to cause numerous health issues, including respiratory infections, heart disease, and even cancer."

Mahesh shared a video with Stomp showing a man smoking while walking from Sembawang MRT station, near Block 339 Sembawang Close on July 14.

Despite regulations on where people can smoke, Mahesh said the disregard for the rules seems to be increasing.

"I urge the concerned authorities and enforcement agencies to take immediate and strict action to curb this trend," he said.

"Public awareness campaigns, stricter fines, and dedicated smoke-free zones are some measures that can help protect the health of the general public."

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), smoking is prohibited in many public areas, including bus stops, common areas in residential buildings, parks and markets.

Those caught flouting the rules may face fines of up to $1,000.
