Used syringes are a biohazard.

He was taking a short cut through a Geylang alley when he saw a man using a syringe to inject himself into the back of his hand.

Stomper Lee shared a photo of the incident on June 4, which shows the man sitting on the kerb by the narrow road in front of several parked bicycles.

Lee also shared photos of used syringes strewn around a bicycle taken on June 19.

"The alley between Lorong 9 and Lorong 11 seems to have become a place where people are openly injecting and dumping used needles," said the Stomper.

"It's a worry that someone may prick themselves on a used needle, such as a child or someone responsible for cleaning the area."

This is not the first time he had such an encounter in the vicinity. Lee added that he witnessed three people injecting themselves behind a restaurant at Lorong 24A Geylang a few years ago.

He wondered whether any organisation could provide sharps boxes at the location so that the used syringes can be collected and disposed of safely.

"I do hope there is something that can be done," said the Stomper.

In response to a Stomp query, the Singapore Police Force and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said that the police, together with the other law enforcement agencies including CNB, regularly monitor the situation in Geylang and conduct enforcement actions.

The joint statement added that those who wish to provide any information relating to safety and security may call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit it online at www.police.gov.sg/i-witness.

Those who wish to provide any drug-related information may call the CNB hotline at 1800-325-6666.

In March, Shin Min Daily News reported that residents of Lorong 20 Geylang are concerned about public safety after witnessing suspected drug abusers shoot up in '"broad daylight".
