At least 35 cases of Netflix subscribers duped by phishing scam were reported with total losses amounting to at least $40,000 since Oct 1.

The scam victims would receive an email purportedly from Netflix, claiming that there were issues with payment or subscription which resulted in a temporary suspension of their Netflix account.

The email would instruct victims to click on a URL embedded in the email to verify their details.

The victims who clicked on the URL would be directed to a phishing site, which would prompt them to key in their banking credentials or card details.

They would only realise that they had been scammed when they discover unauthorised transactions on their cards or in their bank account statements.

The police said Netflix would never ask for personal information such as card numbers and bank account details, in a text or email.
