A 68-year-old bus driver was taken to hospital after crashing into a road divider in Hougang on May 1.

The police told Stomp that they were alerted to the accident involving the bus, which was believed to have self-skidded, along Hougang Avenue 8 towards Hougang Avenue 2 at around 5.50am.

The bus driver was conscious when taken to hospital. He remains warded and is assisting with investigations.

Stomper Gary said the collision occurred outside Montfort Junior School, adding: "The bus ploughed into the opposite lane."

The Stomper also saw the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force responding to the accident.

He shared photos showing the SBS Transit bus mounting the central road divider. The bus also appeared to have knocked down some trees.

Workers can be spotted at the scene.

Mrs Grace Wu, spokeswoman for SBS Transit, said the bus captain of bus service 101 had "suddenly experienced breathing difficulties and felt unwell, resulting in the bus colliding into a road divider."

The bus captain was conveyed to hospital where he remains warded, she added.

"We are in close contact with him and are providing support and assistance. We wish him a smooth and full recovery.

"Passengers on board were unhurt and we apologise for the distress and inconvenience caused."

Police investigations are ongoing.
