RSAF officer encounters unconscious man while on the way home, rescues him from brink of death
A Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) officer was on his way home when he heard someone call for help.
It turned out that there was an unconscious man lying on the ground. He was not breathing and did not have a pulse.
Together with members of the public, Captain (CPT) Tan Yu Xiang, a RSAF search and medical rescue officer, resuscitated and saved the man.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident occurred at the carpark of Block 205 Hougang Street 21 on Nov 2, at 6.30pm.
The RSAF shared CPT Tan's account of the incident in a Facebook post on Nov 16.
CPT Tan said his training kicked in and he immediately responded upon seeing the man. He performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation while two members of the public helped to fetch an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a medical kit.
The man was transferred into the care of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedics as his pulse stabilised.
In response to media queries, SCDF said it conveyed one person to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
CPT Tan recounted: "As a search and rescue medical officer, my training taught me to handle challenging conditions and helped me respond effectively in this situation."
RSAF's Facebook post noted that everyone at the scene had played a key role and "their collective effort brought the man back from the brink of death."
It also said that the man is recovering well in hospital.
CPT Tan added: "It's heartening to see civic-minded Singaporeans, regardless of background, unite to help someone in need."
