Resident taken to hospital after fire breaks out at Sumang Lane, 60 people evacuated
A fire broke out at Block 224A Sumang Lane in the early hours of Jan 26.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement that they were alerted to the incident at about 5.05 am.
Firefighters from Punggol, Sengkang, and Tampines Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene.
"Upon arrival, black smoke was emitting from a unit on the seventh floor," SCDF said.
Stomper Michael alerted Stomp to a video of the fire posted on Singapore News' Facebook page.
Flames and thick plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from a window of the affected unit.
"The fire, which involved a bedroom, was extinguished with a water jet," SCDF said.
Four people had evacuated the unit before SCDF's arrival.
About 60 people from neighbouring units were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.
One person was assessed by a paramedic for smoke inhalation and was taken to Singapore General Hospital.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely caused by an electrical origin in the bedroom.
SCDF remind the public to adopt the following good practices to prevent electrical fires:
- Do not overload power sockets with electrical appliances;
- Switch off electrical appliances when not in use;
- Check the condition of wires regularly. Frayed wires should be replaced or repaired immediately;
- Do not run wires under carpets or mats and keep wires away from hot surfaces;
- Use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. The categories of appliances can be found at http://www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg;
- Do not leave batteries or devices to charge unattended for an extended period of time or leave it charging overnight.
