A man was shopping for groceries during the wee hours of July 31 when he realised he was not alone.

Stomper Danish said he spotted "four big rats" in Prime Supermarket at Block 461 Yishun Avenue 6 at around 5am.

Danish, who shared videos of the rodent sighting, usually visits the 24-hour supermarket in the evenings.

"That day, I went at close to 5am, so there weren't many customers around," he recounted. "It was my first time seeing rats there."

Danish contacted Stomp at 5.30am and said: "I approached and informed staff about it. They already knew about the existence of rats in the store and were pretty chill about it. Damn.

"One worker even said they had tried calling pest control, but they couldn't do anything because there's a rubbish chute opposite the supermarket's entrance and that's where the rats come from.

"Even so, it's disgusting and uncanny having rats roaming in a supermarket with fruits and everything on display openly.

"Prime Supermarket should close the outlet and do a deep clean because I'm pretty sure that running a store with pests like that is against a health code."

In response to a Stomp query, a spokesperson for Prime Supermarket said: "This matter was brought to the attention of our operations and management team.

"Please be notified that we have taken strict measures to prevent the pests from having access to food and engaged in routine professional services. Pest control was called to proceed down to the store for investigation and necessary action has been taken."

The supermarket will do its "ultimate best" to prevent the incident from occurring again, the spokesperson added.
