A massive plume of smoke from across the Strait of Johor could be seen from the northeastern coast of Singapore on the morning of March 3.

Stomper Anonymous shared photos of the smoke filling the sky, taken from the Punggol Park Connector outside Northshore Plaza 2.

"The thick smoke and unpleasant smell crossed the shore within a short span of time," said the Stomper.

Stomper Just A Resident shared a video of the smoke taken from Northshore Plaza 2 and expressed concern about the air pollution.

She said: "Many new BTOs have been built here and many families with young children have moved into the area. There are also numerous childcare centres nearby.

"However, the air quality here has been consistently poor, and it does not seem to be widely discussed."

The source of the smoke was a factory fire in Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru. The state fire department said it was alerted at 9.01am, reported New Straits Times.

Firefighters found the area used to store furniture products and related materials on fire. Almost 80 per cent of the structure had been destroyed by the time they arrived.

The blaze was brought under control at 10.07am. No injuries were reported.

Videos of the thick smoke were also posted on social media.
