More mooncakes recalled by SFA because of bacteria

More mooncakes are being recalled because of bacteria, said Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on Sept 13.

As part of its regulatory sampling of mooncakes, SFA detected Escherichia coli (E. coli) in Baker's Cottage's Snow Skin Signature Yam Mooncake imported from Malaysia at levels exceeding the maximum limits stipulated in Singapore's food regulations.

As a precautionary measure, SFA has directed the importer, Ewayz, to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing.

In an announcement on its website, Baker's Cottage said: "While we ensured compliance with SFA standards before exporting to Singapore, it appears that mishandling during transit and storage at a third-party warehouse may have led to product deterioration."

E. coli is a bacteria that is normally found in the intestines of people and animals. Such foodborne pathogens can be introduced during the production process when cross- contamination occurs.

Consumers who have purchased the implicated products should not consume them. Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers can contact their point of purchase for enquiries.

Days earlier, SFA said that Four Seasons Durians' mini D24 durian mooncakes were recalled due to the presence of a bacteria called bacillus cereus exceeding maximum limits.

Four Seasons posted on Instagram on Sept 12 that it "deeply regret any concern or inconvenience this may cause".

The company added: "To initiate a refund process, please bring the product down to any of our outlets (Serangoon Nex #03-K14 or Century Square #B1-30) or Mid-Autumn Festival Kiosk (Takashimaya or Vivo City) along with your receipt by Sept 14, 2024 as per our compliance with Singapore Food Agency."
