A 25-year-old man was charged in court on Oct 8 morning for abusing a cat and killing it.

Stomp understands that the same man was earlier arrested in connection with the slashing of community cats in Toa Payoh.

Ryan Tan Yi Bin was accused of abusing a cat at Block 78 Lorong Limau in Whampoa on Oct 7 between 2am and 4am.

He was alleged to have cruelly kicked the animal and stamped on its body and head multiple times inside a lift before throwing it down from the 38th-storey corridor of the block. The cat was killed.

Appearing in court via video-link from Central Police Division, Tan cast his eyes at the ground and clasped his hands in front of his chest, reported The Straits Times.

A prosecutor from the National Parks Board (NParks) asked the court to not offer him bail and for the Singaporean to be remanded for one week for investigations to be completed.

Facebook user Noreen Loh Hui Miun posted a remembrance of the dead cat whose name was Field Field on Oct 8 afternoon.

She wrote: "It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news of the loss of the beloved community orange cat, Field Field, from Whampoa Dew Block 78. This sweet soul was cruelly taken from us, thrown down from our home block. The pain and sorrow of this senseless act are beyond words.

"Field Field brought so much joy, love, and warmth into everyone’s lives. She was a chill cat that did no harm.

"The person responsible has been caught, and I sincerely hope that justice will be served."

I was hesitant to post the bloody lifeless body of Field Field as I want her to be remembered as a lovely cat that did... Posted by Noreen Loh Hui Miun on Monday 7 October 2024

NParks had told Stomp that Tan, the accused, was arrested in connection with a series of cat slashing in Toa Payoh that was reported by Stomp on Sept 26.

Facebook user Angelina Ang had posted in a group called Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats that two injured cats were found around Block 36 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh on Sept 20 and 21.

The post was later updated to add that another two cats were found "slashed on the back" at Block 200 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on Sept 23.

NParks told Stomp on Sept 27 that the board had received feedback from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals about the alleged cat slashing and was conducting investigations.

First-time offenders convicted of animal cruelty can be jailed for up to 18 months and fined up to $15,000.

Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to three years and fined up to $30,000.
