A Stomper has observed a man feeding pigeons almost every day in Chinatown despite it being illegal.

Stomper Sam shared videos he took of the man throwing bread from a red plastic bag from Chinatown Point to People's Park Centre taken on Mar 16 at around 5.15pm.

"This recalcitrant pigeon feeder appears almost daily around 5pm to 5.30pm at Chinatown Point, Hong Lim Market and Food Centre and surrounding areas to litter the place with bread crumbs against all rules.

"He dresses in the same clothes every time!

"The pigeons poop and cause stains and mess on tables and floors in public areas including People's Park Food Centre and on roofs and open areas.

"Hopefully the authorities can take necessary action to return hygiene back to these places."

Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to feed any wild animal, including pigeons, in any place.

First-time offenders can be fined up to $5,000 while repeat offenders face a maximum fine of $10,000.

Rock pigeons are an invasive species in Singapore and feeding pigeons will cause their population to increase.

Apart from staining public areas and homes with their droppings, pigeons also carry diseases that can be contracted by humans through contact with diseased live birds, their droppings and their carcasses.

Those with lower immunity, like children and the elderly, are more vulnerable.

Leftover food from feeding pigeons can also attract more pests, including cockroaches and rats, that may carry diseases and pose a risk to public health.
