A food stall along Paya Lebar Road was broken into, with more than $180 in cash stolen from its safe box.

The police said they were alerted to the housebreaking case on April 5, at around 10am. They established the perpetrator's identity and arrested him within seven hours of the report.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 24-year-old man is allegedly involved in other similar cases of housebreaking and theft.

He will be charged with the offence of housebreaking and theft on April 7, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The police reminded all property owners to safeguard themselves against crime by securing all doors, shutters and any openings with grilles and padlocks before leaving the premises unattended, even for a short while.

They should also refrain from keeping large sums of cash and valuables in their premises.

"Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor lights and/or CCTVs, to cover the access points into your premises," the police advised. "Ensure that they are tested periodically and are in good working condition."
