It was an offer they could not resist.

Show your Community Health Assist Scheme (Chas) card, Pioneer Generation card or Merdeka Generation card and get a free durian. As if that isn't enough, the Lexus Durian King stall in Kovan even threw in a free bottle of water as well.

The giveaway started at 3pm on June 27, but dozens of people had started lining up at 1001 Upper Serangoon Road before then, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The stall posted several videos of the long queue on Facebook.

Shin Min said some passers-by saw the crowd, found out what was going on and joined the queue.

Stall owner Stella Soh told the Chinese evening daily that in the end, she decided that as long as you were in the queue, you get a free durian regardless of whether you have any of the aforementioned cards.

"The most important thing is to make everyone happy," said the durian seller.

In just 2½ hours, all 1,000kg of durians were given away.

One grateful Facebook user commented: "We are so thankful and appreciative for the kind gesture, which will never be forgotten in the history of Singapore. A BIG THANK YOU."

If you missed out on the free fruit, the stall still has an ongoing promotion where certain card holders can get a 20 per cent discount and a free coconut drink.
