A jogger almost ran into a snake in Bukit Panjang on Oct 21 evening.

It was on a footpath next to Chestnut Drive Playground opposite Foresque Residences at Petir Road at about 8pm.

Stomper HBea shared a photo showing several people looking at the reptile.

"I was walking my dog in the area when I saw onlookers stopping and taking pictures," recounted the Stomper.

"I managed to stop a jogger not aware of the snake while approaching the area."

The Stomper described it as 1.5m-long and black with yellow rings. It is likely a gold-ringed cat snake, also known as a mangrove snake.

He said he and his dog stayed a few metres away from the reptile and waited for it to slither away into the bushes before proceeding.

The National Parks Board (NParks) has this advisory on what to do should you encounter a snake in a public area:

  • Observe from a safe distance, as snakes will not attack unless disturbed or provoked.
  • Stay calm and back away slowly, giving it space to retreat.
  • Do not approach or attempt to handle the snake.
  • Leave it alone, especially if it is in its natural habitat. Call NParks at 1800-476-1600 if you need assistance.
  • Keep pets on a tight leash as they might chase the snake and frighten it.
