Is a PMA allowed to carry more than 1 person?
It is a common sight.
Two people were caught on camera on a personal mobility aid (PMA) in Geylang on Oct 3.
Stomper L, who was on a passing double-decker bus, took photos of the man and woman riding together at the junction of Geyland Road and Joo Chiat Road.
"Is this approved?" asked the Stomper.
Under the Active Mobility Act, a PMA, such as a mobility scooter or a motorised wheelchair, must have only one seat and must be designed to carry only one individual who is unable to walk or has difficulties walking.
Devices with multiple seats are not considered mobility scooters.
Also, power-assisted bicycle (PAB) riders must not carry a passenger on cycling paths and roads, if the passenger is under 16 years old.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a Facebook past on Oct 28 that more than 70 riders were caught in September for offences including using non-compliant or unregistered PABs and personal mobility devices (PMDs).
LTA added in the post: "Your devices must also display properly-affixed number plates that meet all requirements."
