A Malaysian man was caught trying to leave Singapore illegally via a lorry on June 12.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority said officers at Tuas Checkpoint had directed the Malaysia-registered lorry for enhanced checks and discovered someone hiding in a "prone position", in a corner of the vehicle's cargo compartment.

ICA shared photos of the incident in a Facebook post titled 'Peekaboo! We see you " on June 13.

The driver, his attendant and the smuggled person were placed under arrest and referred to ICA’s Enforcement Division for further investigation.

ICA said it takes a serious view of attempts to enter or depart Singapore illegally and will not hesitate to prosecute offenders for such cases.

Under the Immigration Act 1959, the penalties for departing Singapore illegally without presenting a valid passport are a fine up to $2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.

For abetting a person to illegally depart Singapore, offenders face a jail term between six months and two years, and a fine up to $6,000.

The vehicles used in such offences are also liable to be forfeited.
