Fire at Simei Road block: 1 firefighter suffers heat exhaustion, 150 residents evacuated

A fire took place on the fourth and fifth floor of Block 164 Simei Road at about 3.20pm on Thursday (Aug 16).

Stomper Even, who resides on the fifth storey of Melville Park, said he was at home when he witnessed the incident.

In videos shared by Even, black and white smoke is seen emerging from the block while firefighters were attempting to extinguish the fire.

He said: "I stay directly across so I saw everything. I also heard cracking sounds from the burning window frame and glass shattering.

"The fire originated from the fourth floor then onto the fifth floor and after 30 minutes, our heroic firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) managed to put out the fire. I saw some pets being rescued too.

"Kudos to our heroes. The police also helped evacuate residents from the block."

Stomper Pooja shared with Stomp a video she received from her husband.

She said: "He was driving past the area at about 3.45pm when he saw it."

In response to a Stomp query, the SCDF said that it was alerted to a fire at 164 Simei Road at about 3.20pm.

The fire involved contents of a bedroom on the fourth and fifth floor. SCDF firefighters extinguished the fire using two water jets, and approximately 150 residents were evacuated by the police.

One SCDF firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and was conveyed to Changi General Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
