A video of an elderly woman falling as she crosses a road while carrying a toddler has triggered netizens.
In the clip, the woman trips at the road divider and falls onto the road as a commercial vehicle passes her. The car recording the incident stops short of running over her and the child, who is still in her grasp.
Another woman then gets out of the car to help her get back on her feet and assists her as she limps across the two-laned road.
'Grandma please don't jaywalk'
Netizens praised the woman who came out of her car to help but were critical of the elderly woman for putting the toddler at risk.
"Grandma please dont jaywalk!!! Omg the granddaughter so young. Don't know what was she thinking!" said one user, who reflected the general tone of comments on the SGRV Facebook page, where the video first appeared on Sept 5. The incident took place a day before at Hougang Avenue 9.
The video was viewed 144,000 times and had 561 and 99 comments at press time. It was also shared on Reddit where it received 134 upvotes and 34 comments.
"You don't care your own life and want to jaywalk is one thing but you take along toddler with you?" said a Redditor.
Some speculated as to what might have caused the woman to fall. "The auntie wanted to cross over upon seeing the van coming she might be stepping backwards n losing balance then falling down," said another Facebook user.
Others commented that elderly people are becoming a road hazard.
"Old people jaywalking is an increasing problem in Singapore. Bad enough that they endanger themselves and cause accidents, but if they are endangering others like in this case, they should be receiving the full punishment of the law," said a Redditor.
Others felt the pedestrian crossing may have been too far. "Considering how spaced out are the pedestrian crossing and how hard it is to get around with a toddler, I am not at all surprised aunty did what she did," said a Redditor.
But the heroine of the day was the woman who came out of the car to provide assistance. "Kudos to the kind lady. Singapore and the world need more people like her," said a Redditor.
