Drunken Canadian arrested at airport for verbally abusing auxiliary officer, shoving and scratching cop

A drunken Canadian was arrested at Changi Airport after allegedly hurting a police officer on the morning of Oct 5.

The police were alerted at about 9.20am to an incident where a man was allegedly drunk and causing nuisance in the public departure area of Changi Airport Terminal One.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man allegedly hurled vulgarities repeatedly at the auxiliary police officer on duty after being instructed to present and place his boarding pass on top of his passport.

Despite repeated warnings to stop, the man purportedly ignored the instructions and walked away.

When officers from Airport Police Division arrived and engaged him, the man allegedly hurled vulgarities at the officers, shoved one of the officers and scratched him.

The man was subsequently arrested.

As a result of his action, the officer sustained minor injuries on his arms and was given two days of medical leave.

The man is expected to be charged in court on Oct 7 with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a police officer from carrying out his duty, using abusive words against a public servant and being drunk causing nuisance.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from carrying out his or her duty carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine or caning.

The offence of being drunk causing nuisance carries an imprisonment term of up to six months, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

The offence of using abusive words against a public servant carries a jail term of up
to 12 months, a fine of up to $5,000 or both.
