Do we hate local talent? Mean comments on S'porean ex-J-Pop idol spark questions
Welcome to Stomping Ground - a space where Stompers share reflections, personal essays and social commentaries that spark conversation and insight.
The reactions to a local artist being a part of the lineup for an international music festival hosted in Singapore have raised questions about our culture.
Stomper Minski recently came across an advertisement on social media for Waterbomb Singapore 2025, a music festival originating from Seoul with locations across Asia.
The advertisement featured Singaporean singer Estelle Fly, who is set to perform.
However, Minski was disappointed by the negative comments like, "Who is that?", "Is she an OnlyFans creator?" and "She's a failed K-Pop trainee."
Minski said: "Fun fact, Estelle Fly used to be a J-Pop idol, so that user got the K-Pop part wrong, LOL."
One user asked who Estelle was and the singer replied "Come and find out!".
"However, that nobody remarked by saying: 'some boring local, next'," Minski explained.
"It makes me wonder, do Singaporeans really hate local talent with such passion?" she asked. "If so, what's the reason for being so salty?
"In my opinion, although we rarely hear Singaporeans making a name overseas, we should give people a chance to shine, no?"
In April, Stomp chatted with LA-based Singaporean actor Rayve Tay on similar topics, such as the disdain for local talent.
The issue continues to be a point of contention, with Minski wondering if Singaporeans are even less supportive than foreigners of our homegrown talent.
The Stomper said: "If Canadian pop duo Crash Adams can give us a chance to shine by featuring local artists in their YouTube shorts, why can't we do something like that as well?"
"I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding local talent.
"Friendly reminder: if you have nothing nice to say, kindly scroll away."
