A diner was disgusted to find a cockroach floating in her curry noodles from Boon Lay Place Food Village on Aug 2.

So much so that she rushed to the toilet and made herself purge whatever she had already consumed.

Recounting her experience at Fong Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodle, Stomper Koh said: "I was the first customer that morning as the stall had just opened for business.

"I ordered curry chicken noodles and ate about two-thirds of it when I saw something floating up from the gravy. I used my chopsticks to pick it up but still couldn't figure out what it was, so I placed it at the side of my bowl.

"My mind turned blank when I realised it was a roach. I'm very afraid of cockroaches. I ran to the toilet and tried to force myself to vomit out the food.

"It was disgusting! 🤢I felt so traumatised the whole day, wondering if some part of the cockroach was inside my stomach."

Koh explained why she did not approach the stall about the issue: "I did not dare to as I was scared they would scold or shout at me. As you know, some hawkers can be very unreasonable."

She also did not know who to inform as it was her first time encountering something like this, but lodged a report with the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) after Stomp's advice.

In response to a Stomp query, SFA said it did not detect any food safety lapses after inspecting the food establishment.

"Nonetheless, the food operator was reminded to ensure all food sold must be wholesome and to always keep the premises pest-free," SFA added.

"Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.

"Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained."

Members of the public who have concerns about food safety practices by food operators should report to SFA via the online feedback form.

SFA said it takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.

As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained.
