The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has stepped up enforcement outside Potong Pasir MRT station after cyclists were seen cycling through the bus stop outside the station.

Stomper Anita shared photos she took of the cyclists at about 5.35pm on July 25.

"The cyclists think it is their red path at the bus stop outside Potong Pasir MRT station exit C," Anita said.

"Some cycle like it's their right of way when actually it is a bus stop area where commuters - from vulnerable toddlers to the frail and elderly - wait for buses daily. During peak hours, the bus stop is even more crowded and even more cyclists use this path."

The Stomper added that she had seen young cyclists riding their bicycles while looking at their phones.

"What's worse - there is a mini bicycle parking space just next to the bus stop. Can the authorities do something before someone gets hurt?" asked the Stomper

In response to a Stomp query, an LTA spokesperson said: "We are aware of the situation and have stepped up enforcement at this location to deter unsafe cycling behaviour and ensure the safety of bus commuters.

"We are also studying additional safety measures at this location."

Under the Active Mobility Act, it is an offence to use mobile communication devices when riding on public paths. In addition, cyclists who speed or ride recklessly in a manner that endangers others may face a fine of up to $10,000 or imprisonment of up to 12 months.

The spokesperson added: "Our enforcement officers will take firm action against reckless riders whose behaviour poses a risk to public safety."

LTA reminds cyclists to slow down near bus stops and dismount where necessary, particularly when passengers are boarding or alighting.

Those who witness unsafe riding behaviour can report it through LTA's online feedback form.
