The noise from the construction site at Layar LRT is getting worse after two years, said a Sengkang resident.

Stomper Ong had read the June 26 Stomp report about the issue at Sengkang West Avenue.

"The noise pollution continues and it is worse now. We've already suffered for two years and it's getting worse," said the Stomper.

"Why such a project can be approved at the doorstep of residential blocks for years? Can we residents voice our concerns?

"This is prolonged noise. There is banging, shouting, et cetera."

In response to a Stomp query for the earlier report, a spokesperson from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the structural concrete works along Sengkang West Avenue are in progress for the construction of new reception track viaducts as part of the Sengkang-Punggol LRT Depot Expansion.

LTA explained that the works must be carried out continuously until the structures are completed to prevent the ground from collapsing and ensure structural integrity measures that are essential for the safety of the workers, commuters and motorists.

Apart from these safety-critical works, all other construction activities generally stop by around 10pm.

The works are targeted to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.

"We regret the inconveniences caused to residents," said the spokesperson.

"LTA closely monitors the noise levels at all our construction sites. We understand that construction work activities can be disruptive, especially for residents living near the sites."

To minimise the impact on the residents in the vicinity, LTA and the contractor have implemented various noise mitigation measures. A comprehensive noise impact assessment was conducted prior to commencement of work, and a noise management plan was put in place.

Where possible, 6m noise barriers have been installed along the perimeter of the worksite with additional noise mitigation measures such as localised noise barriers, inflatable noise balloons have also been deployed around operating machines to further reduce noise at the source.

The spokesperson added: "LTA and the contractor will continue to keep the residents and stakeholders informed on the construction activities through circulars, house visits and community engagement events.

"We thank residents and stakeholders for their patience and understanding."
