Following a recent disruption on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT line on Aug 15 that forced commuters to walk along the tracks, one Stomper raised a question about accessibility in times of crisis.

A power fault disrupted service for the second time in three days on Aug 15.

Reflecting on the incident, Stomper Marshall said: "My concern is towards those people in wheelchairs. It's unfortunate to be caught in that situation."

Marshall, who has been using a wheelchair since suffering a mild stroke in December 2023, explained that not all wheelchair users can walk short distances.

"I can still walk slowly with a walking stick," he said. "For those who cannot walk, somebody has to carry him or her, preferably on their backs. If the route is level and broad, then it's ok to push the wheelchair."

He recalled how, during a cruise to Melaka, four men had to carry his wheelchair from the boat to the jetty platform and back again on the return trip.

Marshall added that he is currently practising to walk without a stick at home.

"What actions are in place for wheelchair users?" he asked.
