A man was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Kallang on Aug 20 while he was on the run from the law over charges including assault.

Following the tragedy, police managed to establish Muhammad Ashik Abdullah's identity and officers arrested him five days later.

On Aug 27, the 33-year-old Singaporean was handed multiple charges for offences including causing a death by driving in a dangerous manner.

Before the accident, which killed a tow truck driver, Ashik already faced charges over an incident in 2024.

Court documents stated that he was in a flat on the eighth floor of a Woodlands Housing Board block at around 4.30pm on June 8, 2024, when he allegedly flung a photo frame out of a window.

He is also accused of slapping a woman's cheek in the unit that day.

Ashik was out on bail when he failed to return to court on May 23.

The court issued a warrant of arrest against him, and he was on the run when he allegedly drove a car in a dangerous manner along Lavender Street towards Balestier Road at around 10pm on Aug 20.

Ashik is said to have failed to keep a proper control of the vehicle when it collided with the rear of a nearby tow truck, which flipped to the right.

Its 57-year-old driver was unconscious when he was taken to hospital but died later.

Ashik allegedly fled the scene, and is said to have reoffended four days later.

At around 7.20am on Aug 24, he allegedly committed a rash act by driving a car in Woodlands while another man was holding on to one of its windows.

According to court documents, the man suffered injuries including abrasions to his right thigh and elbow.

Ashik was arrested the next day and his case will be mentioned again in court on Sept 3.

For causing another person's death by driving in a dangerous manner, an offender can be jailed for up to eight years.
