A 22-year-old man was charged on April 19 with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons after allegedly slashing another man and injuring three police officers.

R. Nadhiban is accused of using a knife to slash Mr Kaalithasan Govindaragi, 30.

The police had received several calls for assistance at Blocks 676 and 677 Hougang Avenue 8 on April 17 at about 1.10pm. Members of the public had witnessed a naked man purportedly damaging vehicles at the open carpark.

He then damaged a parked vehicle before purportedly picking up a wooden plank with nails and using it to damage a stationary bus at Hougang Avenue 4.

Upon the police's arrival, Nadhiban allegedly attacked them with the wooden plank as they attempted to arrest him. Three police officers suffered minor injuries in subduing Nadhiban.

Mr Govindaragi, who sustained injuries on his arm, was conscious when taken to the hospital.

Nadhiban was ordered to be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for medical examination. His case will be before the courts again on May 2, reported The Straits Times.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine, caning, or any combination of such punishments.

The police said a member of the public, Mr Shari bin Mohd, displayed commendable bravery when he intervened to protect the Mr Govindaragi and his three-year-old son during the incident by moving them away from Nadhiban.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Xie Xingmao said, "Mr Shari's courageous intervention prevented what could have been a very dangerous and deadly situation. His selfless actions exemplify the strong community spirit that helps keep the community safe."

Mr Shari will be presented with the Public Spiritedness Award.
