Residents helped carry elderly to evacuation area in Jalan Bahagia fire, SCDF and police 'rose to occasion': MP
A fire broke out at Block 34 Jalan Bahagia in Whampoa on the evening of National Day.
About 50 people from the affected block were evacuated by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police as a precaution.
Jalan Besar GRC MP Shawn Loh had just attended the National Day Parade at the Padang.
"I saw SCDF's Red Rhinos rush to the scene on my way back from the National Day Parade, and I joined them soon after to see that everyone was okay," said Mr Loh in a social media post.
"Thankfully, no one was injured and most residents have returned to their flats. Our residents' network has also opened their centre to provide respite.
"On our National Day, it was poignant that our SCDF and SPF (Singapore Police Force) rose to the occasion to respond swiftly to minimise all harm."
"There were three residents in the block that also helped to alert the rest and even carried some of our seniors down to the evacuation area. Truly, we are stronger together."
In its own social media post, SCDF said it responded to the fire in a bedroom of a 6th-storey flat on Aug 9 at 9.30pm.
Firefighters entered the smoke-filled unit and extinguished the fire with a water jet. There was no one inside the flat when SCDF arrived.
Preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the fire is likely from an electrical origin in the affected bedroom.
