A fire broke out in a Housing Board (HFB) flat bedroom in Toa Payoh on July 14.

Stomper Zennirka alerted Stomp to the incident, sharing a photo of smoke rising from a unit on the 12th floor of Block 194 Kim Keat Avenue.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that it was alerted to the fire at about 11.50am.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled unit and extinguished the fire with a water jet.

Three people had evacuated the unit before SCDF's arrival and about 60 people were evacuated from the block by the police.

SCDF assessed two people from the unit for smoke inhalation. One of them was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, while the other declined to be sent to the hospital.

Even though the fire broke out in the bedroom, the rest of the unit and the common corridor outside also sustained heat and smoke damage.

Investigations reveal that the cause of the fire was likely from an electrical origin in the bedroom.

SCDF reminded the public to prevent such fires by ensuring electrical outlets are not overloaded with electrical appliances and are switched off when not in use.

Members of the public are also urged to check the condition of wires regularly, as frayed wires or cracked cords should be replaced or repaired immediately.

Wires should not be run under carpets or mats, and should be kept away from hot surfaces.

Batteries or charging devices should not be left unattended for an extended period of time or overnight.

Additionally, only use appliances and electrical plugs bearing the safety mark.
