Twelve drivers were caught at Changi Airport providing illegal ride-hailing services within Singapore to and from Malaysia on Dec 18.

Their foreign-registered vehicles were also impounded, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on social media on Dec 19.

For providing illegal hire-and-reward services, including cross-border trips without a valid public service vehicle licence, the drivers face fines up to $3,000, imprisonment up to six months, or both.

The vehicle used may also be forfeited.

"Avoid using illegal ride services," LTA advised the public.

"They are unsafe and may lack proper insurance, putting passengers at risk."

Sharing LTA's post, The National Private Hire Vehicles Association said on Facebook on Dec 20: "We’re proud to have supported LTA’s efforts in addressing illegal ride-hailing activities at Changi Airport.

"Through close collaboration and our collective vigilance, we’ve helped protect the livelihoods of private-hire drivers and ensured a level playing field in the industry."

Earlier in the year, 14 drivers were caught providing illegal chauffeur services at Changi Airport between Aug 27 and 30.

On Aug 7, LTA had also caught another four drivers providing illegal cross-border rides between Singapore and Malaysia.
