Eleven trains stalled in the Circle Line tunnels during the traction power outage that disrupted train services along the entire line on Sept 17 at 5.50pm.

The trains' onboard battery provided partial lighting and ventilation without air-conditioning, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Facebook later that night.

"After power was restored by 6.05pm, SMRT staff had to manually recover these trains and all were driven to the next station by 6.30pm. Consequently, journeys were delayed by about 30 minutes."

Stomper Tingsley and Mike shared photos of the massive crowds in HarbourFront and Dhoby Ghaut MRT stations during the service disruption.

LTA said: "In accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure, SMRT had to manage the inflow of commuters to the stations during the progressive restoration of train services. This is done to avoid over-crowding and ensure safety of commuters."

Free boarding of regular bus service were provided at designated bus stops along the Circle Line. SMRT and SBS Transit also deployed station staff to assist affected commuters, especially at interchange stations.

"LTA will investigate into the cause of the traction power trip and assess the adequacy of SMRT's service recovery measures," said LTA.

SMRT said on Facebook on Sept 18 morning: "We understand commuters have had a long day yesterday, and we sincerely apologise for the extended travel time. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all those affected."
