One person was killed and thirteen others injured in a three-vehicle accident on Malaysia's North-South Expressway near Gopeng, Perak, on Wednesday (Dec 6).

Among the victims were 12 express bus passengers who were believed to have been travelling from Singapore to Ipoh.

According to The Star, a fire and rescue department spokesman said the driver of the double-decker bus is believed to have rammed his vehicle into the back of a trailer that was transporting paper.

Unable to brake in time, a container lorry then smashed right into the rear of the bus, he said.

A distress call was made and rescuers arrived at the scene shortly after.

The spokesman added: "The bus driver managed to pull himself out of the wreckage."

All casualties were rushed to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh to seek medical attention but one victim subsequently died.
