Man arrested over illegal discharge of fireworks at Tiong Bahru carpark

A 20-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting off fireworks illegally at a multi-storey HDB carpark in Tiong Bahru on Oct 26.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, the police said that they were alerted to the incident at Block 131A Kim Tian Road at about 10.30pm that day.
No injuries were reported, the police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
A witness to the incident, Ms Sultani, told ST said that she was alerted by the noise at around 10.30pm that day.
The 18-year-old student said she saw a man setting off fireworks at the top floor of the multi-storey carpark, adding that the man was taking videos of the pyrotechnic display a distance away.
A 26-second video uploaded on TikTok showed the fireworks going off at the parking lots on the top floor of the carpark, which is next to some HDB blocks.
This is the second reported fireworks-related incident in October.
On Oct 20, the police said they were investigating a suspected case of fireworks being set off illegally in Newton on Oct 18.
A 39-year-old man has since been charged under the Guns, Explosive and Weapons Control Act 2021.
Anyone found guilty of unauthorised usage of a prohibited explosive can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $100,000.
Under the Dangerous Fireworks Act, anyone found guilty of discharging dangerous fireworks can be jailed for up to two years, fined between $2,000 and $10,000, or both.
The first conviction under the Act happened in March 2019. A man was fined $5,000 after admitting to setting off fireworks in Bukit Batok with his son in November 2018.
