# Guardian angels tend to Stomper, 70, apply plaster on his bleeding elbow after he falls at Giant Tampines

Two Guardian employees were busy at work when a “very loud” noise outside their store at Giant Hypermarket in Tampines prompted them to investigate.

It turned out that a 70-year-old man had fallen down.

“The wheels of my trolley were stuck at the last segment of the travelator,” Stomper Antonio recounted. “I tried giving it a shove, and in doing so, I lost my balance and fell flat on my buttocks.”

Although the incident occurred on the night of Aug 26, it took Antonio some time to share the incident with Stomp, as he was “still recuperating and reeling from the pain of the fall”. He wanted to locate and thank the group of kind souls who had come to his aid.

On Oct 2, Haszlizarina Binte Jamel, 49, and Nor Atika Binti Mohamad, 30, from Guardian Health & Beauty + Pharmacy were presented with Stomp Goody Bags for their valiant efforts.

Atika, a supervisor who has worked at Guardian for about two and a half years, said she approached Antonio to check on him after bystanders helped him up.

Although he repeatedly said he was okay and declined help “so many times”, Atika observed that he was bleeding and applied a plaster — a gesture that left a deep impression on the Stomper.

“I said, ‘It’s okay, later got infection, I help you to paste the Handyplast to stop the bleeding first,” she recalled. “He was shaking, so I was very scared.”

Meanwhile, assistant store manager Rina was worried that Antonio was in shock and noticed how he kept brushing his back.

“I told him that he might not feel the hurt now, but it would take effect after.”

Even after Antonio left on his own, the two women remained concerned about how he was doing.

“We just hope that he’s okay,” Rina told Stomp.

## A passion for working with people

For Rina, helping others is part and parcel of her job. She has been with Guardian for 26 years, including the past three years at the Giant Hypermarket outlet.

“The reason why I stay on with Guardian is because of my passion for people,” she said, adding that she enjoys learning about health and products.

Her work includes ensuring that the store runs smoothly and supporting team members with their daily tasks.

Atika said her interest in beauty drew her to the role. Since joining Guardian, she has gradually built her knowledge of beauty and health products.

“I can now suggest recommendations to customers until they come back to buy more and more,” she quipped.

Asked about the challenges of the retail industry, Rina stressed the importance of staying calm when dealing with customers, even in difficult situations.

“Sometimes, we know that we can’t please everyone,” she told Stomp. “The important thing is we just do our best and do our part.”

## Small act, but big difference

While thankful for the commendation, the pair said they were also surprised as they were just doing what was right.

“Always be kind and helpful regardless of who we are dealing with,” said Rina, citing the importance of teamwork and communication. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a customer or not.”

Atika added: “Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference to someone.”
