# ‘She must have been in so much pain’: Son heartbroken over mum, 77, dragged 1.5km by minibus

The son of a 77-year-old woman who was dragged 1.5km by a minibus to the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) is heartbroken over the “terrible” condition in which his mother’s body was found.

He told Shin Min Daily News that he would find it difficult to forgive the driver if his actions were not unintentional.

The victim, Madam Liu (transliterated), was killed after being hit by a minibus at the junction of Jurong West Street 61 and Jurong West Avenue 4.

She was reportedly dragged for more than 1.5km before her body was found along the PIE towards Changi Airport on Oct 16.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the minibus driver had fled the scene before officers arrived.

A 66-year-old man was later arrested for driving without due care and attention causing death. Investigations are ongoing.

## Family heartbroken over death

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News at the wake on the night of Oct 17, Madam Liu’s son, Mr Huang (transliterated), said his mother remained mentally alert and insisted on working as a cleaner despite her age.

“Every day, after finishing breakfast, my mother would go to work,” he said.

Huang recalled returning home on the morning of the accident to find his mother missing. As she usually left for work in the mornings, he did not think much of it.

It was only when the police called to inform him that his mother had died in an accident on the expressway that he realised the gravity of the situation.

He immediately drove to the scene.

“My first thought was that my mother could not have possibly made her way onto the expressway herself,” Huang said.

He later learnt from the police that his mother had been hit near their home and dragged 1.5km to the expressway.

Huang, his parents’ only son, said the family was heartbroken by what had happened to his mother.

“An accident is one thing, but my mother was hit and dragged for such a long distance,” he said.

“I saw the condition she was in at the end, and it was very bad. She was trapped under the vehicle.”

> “She must have been in so much pain and felt so helpless.

Huang said the family still did not know exactly how the accident happened, why his mother became trapped beneath the vehicle or why the driver did not stop.

The driver has not contacted the family.

Asked whether he could forgive the driver, Huang said his feelings were complicated.

He added that the family would not stop the driver from attending the wake to pay his respects, although he was concerned that relatives might become emotional if he showed up.

## Family performs spirit-summoning ritual at accident scene

Liu’s family performed a spirit-summoning ritual near the junction where the accident occurred on Oct 17.

Huang said he collected his mother’s body at about 2pm after being notified by the police, before returning to the scene to carry out the ritual.

At about 3.40pm, he was seen at the scene with his wife and his father, who is in his 80s.

The ritual master laid out Liu’s clothes, trousers and shoes on the ground, followed by an umbrella. Food offerings, including white rice, tofu, oranges and huat kueh (prosperity cakes), were also placed nearby.

Huang held a spirit-summoning banner as he stood beside his wife while the master chanted prayers. His father stood nearby throughout.

The ritual lasted about 10 minutes before the family left for the funeral parlour.

## Son encouraged mother to work after she recovered from illness

Liu had suffered a brain haemorrhage several years ago but recovered.

Huang said he encouraged her to return to work to keep active and give her a greater sense of fulfilment.

As his mother preferred staying home and watching television, he felt that working would benefit her health.

“My mother was a very simple person. She spent most of her time at home, and working gave her a reason to go out. It was also better for her health,” he said.

Huang added that his mother had previously worked at a coffee shop opposite their home but had recently changed jobs.
