This follows the circulation of an audio clip in which a woman was purportedly heard angrily confronting the abbot inside his quarters, accusing him of dating multiple women.

Thai news outlet Khaosod English reported on Oct 19 that Phra Khru Sophon Chitraphirom, abbot of Wat Prasat Thong in Ban Kruat district, was questioned for nearly two hours by provincial Buddhist officials, senior monks, local administrators, and community leaders.

During the inquiry, he acknowledged that he had flirted with a woman on Facebook, but maintained that they had never had a sexual relationship.

He also denied allegations that he was dating three women at the same time.

Tearfully, he said the alleged conduct did not amount to a parajika offence, a grave offence that warrants expulsion from the monkhood.

However, he decided to leave the monkhood on Oct 26.

Doing so would ease concerns among his followers and locals, and prevent further damage to the community’s reputation, he said.

## Woman allegedly confronts monk for 30 minutes

According to Malaysian news outlet China Press, the 42-year-old woman stormed into the abbot’s quarters and confronted him for about 30 minutes.

Among the accusations, she reportedly said: “I’m not afraid of going to hell because I’m going to hell with you.”

When villagers approached the abbot for an explanation, he reportedly dismissed the woman’s accusations, saying she was drunk. However, his response only fuelled suspicions among some villagers about their relationship.
