# Man tries breaking into drug seller’s home to steal while latter is in remand

Two men tried to break into a drug seller’s house to commit theft while the latter was in remand, but were arrested before they could enter the flat.

One of the men, Muhammad Syairul Hisham Hashim, 37, faced 39 charges, including attempted housebreaking, drug possession, drug consumption, and theft.

He pleaded guilty to six charges on Oct 21 and was sentenced to two years and eight months’ jail.

## Man and friend devise plan to break into home

Court documents showed that Syairul’s friend, Ahmad Irshad Hamid, 39, had previously bought drugs from the seller, collecting them from the lift lobby of the latter’s home along Owen Road, located in Farrer Park.

On Oct 1, 2024, the seller was arrested for an unrelated offence and remanded without bail.

Ahmad then decided to engage a locksmith to break into the seller’s home.

About a week later, on Oct 7, he persuaded a friend to lend him his identity card (IC), saying that he intended to use it to apply for a SIM card to gamble online.

After snapping photographs of both sides of the card, Ahmad sent them to another person and asked for the address on the card to be changed to that of the seller.

He also told Syairul about his plan to break into the home, and the latter agreed to accompany him.

## Attempted break-in caught on CCTV

That afternoon, Ahmad told a locksmith that his uncle had been jailed and that he needed to enter the home to retrieve some belongings.

He showed the locksmith the doctored photographs to support his claim, alleging that the IC belonged to his uncle.

At about 2.18pm that day, the two men and the locksmith arrived at the seller’s home.

Ahmad noticed a CCTV camera outside the home and immediately tried to shift the camera away, but was unsuccessful. He then instructed Syairul to cut its wires instead.

Syairul did so, but the CCTV system had already sent a notification to the seller’s wife’s phone. She saw the trio attempting to enter the unit through the CCTV application on her phone, and immediately called the police.

Unaware of the plan, the locksmith began using his tools to cut through two locks on the gate, while Ahmad and Syairul waited nearby.

Just as he finished cutting the locks, police officers arrived and arrested Ahmad and Syairul at the scene.

## Man tried reselling stolen mobility devices online

Court documents showed that on Sept 17, 2025, Syairul came across an unattended personal mobility aid scooter worth $1,800 in the Yishun Central area and rode off with it.

The victim lodged a police report, and subsequently spotted a listing on second-hand marketplace Carousell for a scooter that resembled the one he had lost.

The victim arranged to meet the seller and took photographs of him, which he provided to the police.

Investigations subsequently confirmed that the seller was Syairul, and he admitted to stealing the scooter.

On Sept 22 that year, Syairul stole a personal mobility device worth $1,300 in the Yishun Street 11 area and subsequently listed it for sale on Carousell as well.
