Upon spotting a lost elderly man in need of help near Jem, an Institute of Technical Education (ITE) student spent 30 minutes walking him home.

Her act of kindness was recognised by ITE in a Facebook post on Oct 22, which commended her for going out of her way to help the 77-year-old man.

## Walked for about 30 minutes

The student, Naira Maisara Binte Abdullah, was about to cycle home at around 8pm one evening when she heard an elderly man asking for help at the bicycle parking area near Jem.

Naira soon realised that the senior had lost his way and gave him directions to head home.

However, the elderly man appeared unsure about the directions that Naira gave him, and so she decided to accompany him home instead.

“She felt bad leaving him alone and thought about how she would feel if her own parents or grandparents were in the same situation,” the post stated.

Along the way, Naira checked the man’s NRIC to confirm his address.

## Elderly man was in the area to renew passport, but did not have phone with him

The student spent the next half an hour walking with the elderly man, during which she learnt that he had been in the area to renew his passport and did not have a phone to contact his family.

When Naira arrived at the man’s home, his son-in-law told her that the family had been searching for him throughout the afternoon.

She stayed until the rest of his family returned and was relieved to see the elderly man reunited with his loved ones.

The man’s family later wrote to ITE to commend Naira.

“The elderly man told me he was proud of my parents for raising me to be helpful, and he was grateful I was there to help him. I felt really appreciated and touched by his words,” Naira said.

## ‘Her empathy and grit will take her far’: Netizens

ITE’s post has amassed more than 7,200 likes, 260 shares, and 315 comments, with many netizens praising Naira's actions.

Many netizens commended her for showing compassion and empathy towards the elderly man.

“Kudos to this little girl. Her empathy and grit will take her far,” a user said.

Others wished her well and expressed pride in her actions.

“She made Singapore proud indeed!” one Facebook wrote.

Some netizens, however, expressed concern for Naira’s safety, suggesting that she should also have alerted the police. One netizen even suggested that Singapore was one of the places where she could safely do so.

A Facebook user, Adira Abdul, who identified the elderly man as her uncle, thanked Naira from the “bottom of (their) hearts”.

“Our family was desperately searching for my uncle and was so worried about his safety,” she wrote, adding that they were grateful Naira had brought him home safely.

“Your kindness and compassion mean more to us than words can express. May you and your family always be blessed with happiness and kindness,” she said.
