Insurance agent allegedly pocketed client’s premium payments, leaving her unable to claim $56k for medical bills
An insurance agent who allegedly cheated at least two clients of over $58,000 was charged in court on April 8.
According to court documents, Shahul Hamid S/o N A Basheer Ahamed, 41, was charged with one count of criminal breach of trust as an agent and three counts of cheating.
One case involved a client who had lodged a police report at Bedok Police Division on Sept 17, 2025, when she was unable to make a claim from her personal insurance policy for outstanding medical bills amounting to $56,444.51 despite having made payments to Hamid.
Following investigations, police officers discovered that the victim’s insurance agent had allegedly failed to secure a personal insurance policy for her.
Instead, Hamid allegedly placed his client under a corporate hospital plan without her knowledge, even though his client was not employed by the corporate company. He then allegedly pocketed the premium payments she made.
As a result, the insurance company did not honour the claim submitted by the victim.
In another incident, Hamid allegedly retained for his own use $2,094.45 that a client had entrusted him with, for the purpose of paying her family’s insurance premiums.
If found guilty of criminal breach of trust as an agent, Hamid faces a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine. If found guilty of cheating, he faces up to three years in jail and/or a fine.
The police said they take a serious view of such offences and will not hesitate to take action against those who abuse their positions of trust to defraud members of the public.
Members of the public are reminded to verify their insurance policies directly with their insurance companies and report suspicious activities to the police.
