The 30-year-old driver who was involved in a traffic accident in Tampines that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and his pregnant wife asked why he was denied bail, maintaining that he had not run away.

The driver, Muhammad Zulfiqar Abdul Aziz, was handed the following nine charges on Oct 31:

- Dangerous driving causing death
- Dangerous driving causing hurt
- Driving under disqualification
- Failing to stop after an accident
- Failing to render assistance after an accident
- Using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage
- Using a deregistered vehicle
- Using a vehicle without a licence
- Exhibiting a false licence plate

According to The Straits Times, the accident happened at around 10.35pm on Oct 29 along Tampines Avenue 12, when a blue Audi crashed through a road divider and barrelled into a motorcycle and another car.

The motorcyclist and his wife, both 24, died after being taken to hospital. The couple leave behind a six-year-old son, and were expecting a second child.

A gag order was put in place on the identities of the victims to protect their son.

The 25-year-old driver of the other car was taken conscious to the hospital.

Police said in a statement on Oct 30 that a search was underway for the male driver and female passenger who had left the scene after the accident.

Zulfiqar and the 29-year-old woman he was with were subsequently arrested that day around West Coast Road.

## Man denied bail for posing flight risk

When Zulfiqar appeared in court via video link on Oct 31, he wore a white polo shirt, and sported golden highlights in his hair, a goatee, and stretched earlobes. His left arm also appeared to be heavily tattooed.

He kept his gaze averted as the charges were read to him in Malay.

Shin Min Daily News reported that Zulfiqar appeared fatigued and occasionally yawned during the court proceedings.

The prosecution urged the court to deny bail for Zulfiqar as he was a flight risk. At the request, he asked why this was so, saying this was only his first court mention and he had not run away.

However, the prosecution maintained that he did run away from the scene.

He was not offered bail after the judge found he posed a flight risk.

Zulfiqar is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov 27.

The female passenger who was in the car with him has not been charged, and investigations are ongoing.

## Eyewitnesses report driver and passenger leaving the scene

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the blue Audi hit the motorcycle — with the impact sending the motorcyclist and his pillion rider flying — before hitting a black car.

One witness, Syazwani, told The Straits Times that she saw the Audi driver unbuckle his seatbelt and hop out of the vehicle, appearing to be uninjured.

Another woman, who also appeared uninjured, was next to him, though she looked shaken and was unable to walk.

“The guy had to drag her up by the armpits,” Syazwani said, recalling that she heard loud music playing from inside the car.

She proceeded to check on the other people involved in the crash and recalled seeing the pair stumbling away from the road towards a grass patch when she looked back.

The motorcyclist and his pillion rider were lying face down on the ground and were unresponsive when she got to them, Syazwani recalled.

“When the ambulance arrived, that’s when we realised the man and the woman in the blue Audi were no longer at the scene, and they had run away,” another eyewitness, Natassja, said.

## Family mourns couple

About 200 mourners gathered at Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery on Oct 30 to pay their respects to the deceased couple.

The wife’s uncle said the family was left in a “state of shock” when they were informed of the accident, expressing concern for the couple’s son.

He added that the family hopes the police can find the driver.

“I’m angry that he fled. I hope the police can find some answers with his arrest,” he said.
