Nanyang Technological University (NTU) students were alarmed when a video of a male student walking naked near Tamarind Hall began circulating on Telegram on the morning of Nov 9, prompting campus security to intervene and police to detain the student.

The video was also shared on subreddit r/NTU by user @katongnuggets on Nov 11, with the title"What's going on outside tama…".

The clip shows a naked man walking along a pedestrian pathway and across the road, without any clothes on. While the footpath remains empty, the camera pans to the person filming the incident, capturing his shocked expression.

"Bro is in his birthday outfit," the user writes in the caption, accompanied by multiple crying emojis.

Student detained by police

In response to queries from Stomp, an NTU spokesperson confirmed the incident, noting that the man is an NTU student. Campus security located the man shortly after the incident was reported, and he was detained by the police.

The spokesperson added that NTU has reached out to the male student and other affected students to extend support.

Stomp understands that NTU is investigating the incident.

NTU students alarmed

A fourth-year NTU student who only wished to be known as Ms Lee, said she had heard about the incident and called it "obscene" and "unsightly".

"If I saw that man, I wouldn't know what's his next move," she told Stomp. "If he can be naked in the open, he can do anything, so I feel unsafe."

She added that videos of similar incidents on campus have circulated online in recent months, such as a clip of two men engaging in sexual activity against a car in a campus carpark.

NTU freshman Paul Lee, 19, said that he had been forwarded the video on Telegram. "It was shocking and hilarious, to see this man so confidently disregard social norms on his morning walk," he said, noting that he would avoid the man if he encountered him. "I fear for the women on campus."

Francis Lim, a 21-year-old NTU student, expressed concern for the man, speculating if his behaviour was related to stress from upcoming exams.

'Some kind of trauma'

The video raised alarm bells for netizens, with several users urging the students to inform campus security as it was a "chargeable crime".

Others were more sympathetic towards the man. One netizen commented: "He may have encountered difficulties in his life and experienced some kind of trauma."

Several found humour in the situation, saying that the weather must have been too hot, while another called it "em-bare-assing".

"Have a few friends who went out public naked before like this, they were all arrested for consumption of controlled drugs," another remarked.
