A 93-year-old woman left her wheelchair momentarily to join other seniors dancing to a live band at 313@Somerset, earning her the title of “dancing queen” among netizens.

Facebook user Leonard Tan shared two videos of the Beats After Six session on Oct 22. The live music event takes place every Thursday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in the Food Republic food court at 313@Somerset.

The nonagenarian, who appears to be accompanied by a caregiver, gamely danced to a rendition of The Beatles’ Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da when she realised that the camera was on her. She is later seen in a wheelchair, moving her arms to the rhythm of the song.

She also appears in the second video, dancing with vigour and in perfect rhythm to Twist and Shout — another hit song from The Beatles.

## Netizens crown her ‘dancing queen’

The two videos have racked up more than 214,000 views as well as hundreds of reactions and comments.

The comments from netizens were largely positive, with several praising the elderly woman.

“This popo still very fit, dance very well,” said a Facebook user. “Ah Ma still got the groove!” another said.

Some even dubbed her the “Dancing Queen”.

“Don’t ‘despise’ that oldest ah ma, she was a dancing queen when young,” said a netizen. “Wonderful, we have such a live band at a food court. Granny is a dancing queen,” another said.

Many netizens also thought it was a great activity for seniors.

“Good to see the elderly folks enjoying the music and dancing away. Great activity for them,” said one.

“I pray that such activities will become a common sight in every neighbourhood — where our elderly can come together in open spaces, singing, dancing, laughing, and celebrating life,” another said.

Netizens also felt it was encouraging to see the young and young and heart mixing on the dancefloor.

“Just be happy. This is a good vibe for all ages,” said one netizen. Another commented: “Good to see the young and old mingling and dancing together.”

Several said they wanted to join in the dancing.

“I am surprised this is allowed. Really! Wow... Get ready for my dancing shoes!” said a netizen. Wow... So happening... Next time I wanna go,” another said.

## 93-year-old grandma has attended two of singer’s performances

Speaking to Stomp, Syltra Lee — the singer who was performing at the food court — said that this was the second time the granny had attended her performance.

“Grandma has attended my performance twice already! Most of the dancing seniors are regulars and show up every Thursday to sing and dance with me! Most tell me they are retired,” says Lee.

“My Thursday shows are the highlight of their weekly activities!” she told Stomp.

According to her, Beats after Six was originally meant to be a one-off programme for the month of June, but was extended due to its popularity.

“It is now going on indefinitely,” said Lee.

She added that it was “wholesome” for her to receive such great responses from people across all age groups, singing and dancing along to familiar tunes. “This proves that Singaporeans know how to have fun!” said Lee, who also performs at Timbre+ Hillview @CMPB on Sundays.
