# Diner washes hands by table, drips water on floor despite nearby sink: Changi Road eatery urges basic etiquette

A diner was captured washing his hands beside his table at a restaurant, despite a washbasin being nearby.

DK Signatures, a restaurant along Changi Road, shared the CCTV footage on their Instagram page @deannaskitchensg and stressed the importance of basic dining etiquette.

The footage shows a man pouring water from a bottle over his hands beside his table, spilling it onto the floor before flicking his hands dry.

A washbasin, circled in red, is located just behind the diner.

A staff member, who walks past the table as it happens, later returns with a mop to clean the floor.

## ‘Take a few steps to the basin or toilet’: Restaurant

In an Oct 30 post sharing the footage, DK Signatures reminded customers that washbasins are located near the restaurant entrance and a toilet is available at the back.

Acknowledging that customers may need to use their hands to enjoy prawn noodles or seafood dishes, the restaurant said that was precisely why the facilities were provided.

“But please, don’t wash your hands at the dining table and let the water drip all over the floor,” they wrote.

Apart from being “unhygienic”, the restaurant said the wet floor could pose a slipping hazard to customers and staff, who ultimately have to clean up the mess.

“So please, just take a few steps to the basin or toilet to wash your hands properly, okay?” they said.

The post garnered more than two million views and 2,700 comments, with many netizens echoing the restaurant’s sentiments.

Many users described the diner’s behaviour as “unacceptable”, while some said it made them angry.

Several also highlighted the risk of others slipping and falling on the wet floor.

“How do some people lack civic sense?” a comment read.

Others praised the staff member for quickly mopping up the water.

## Restaurant stresses basic dining etiquette in follow-up post

In a follow-up post on Oct 31, DK Signatures addressed comments, questions and assumptions made in response to its initial post.

Responding to comments speculating about the couple’s race and nationality, Deanna, the owner of DK Signatures clarified that they are locals and stressed that race and nationality were “never the point”.

“It also wasn’t our intention to shame or embarrass them, which is why we blurred their faces,” she wrote, urging people to stop speculating.

“Bad dining etiquette has nothing to do with race or nationality,” she said.

Deanna said no one approached the couple because she and her husband were not at the restaurant at the time. They only learnt about the incident afterwards.

She added that staff aim to help customers rather than confront them. In this case, she believed they were “genuinely at a loss as to what to do”, noting that it was the first time they had encountered such behaviour in nearly 10 years.

Deanna said that the video was simply a reminder that basic dining etiquette and consideration “should apply everywhere”, regardless of where one is eating.

“I think we can all be a little more considerate towards the people working in F&B,” she concluded.
