# Customers spend $1,000 buying out Bedok minimart’s stock, distribute food to nearby residents

A group of customers spent $1,000 buying out a Bedok minimart’s stock so its elderly owner could go home early, but the 65-year-old decided to join them in distributing the food to residents.

Jay, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, shared the good deed in a TikTok video on Oct 29, saying that they wanted to buy out a minimart aunty’s stock and distribute the goods to “charity”.

Speaking to Stomp, Jay explained that the stall owner, whom he refers to as Aunty Allyson, operates Miao Yin Organic & Vegetarian Mart located at 16 Bedok South Road.

According to him, the 65-year-old has been running the vegetarian frozen food business for around two years, partly to support her brother, who runs a stall selling vegetarian dried goods next to hers.

Hoping to help Allyson out, Jay and four acquaintances visited her stall on Oct 25, and offered to buy out her stock.

When they made the offer, Jay said Allyson was initially “speechless” before becoming “really excited”.

## Spends $1,000 on food and supplies

The group spent $1,000 on three cartons of food and supplies, chatting with Allyson before distributing them together.

During their conversation, Allyson shared that she had been a vegetarian for 18 years, mainly due to her Buddhist belief in not taking lives.

“What stood out to us was how happy running the stall makes her. She loves sharing the benefits of vegetarian food with customers who don’t usually eat vegetarian, and she says she also learns a lot about vegetables from her customers in return,” Jay recalled.

“In her words, it’s a two-way exchange: she shares with them, and they teach her too.”

But the heartwarming interaction didn’t end there. The group had planned to give the food away to neighbouring residents, and Allyson volunteered to join them.

“We didn’t expect her to take off her apron and say ‘I’m coming too’,” he wrote in the post’s caption.

“Seeing her so excited to hand out food to strangers reminded me that kindness spreads when you give people the chance to be part of it. It took me back to the days when my mum was carrying our whole family on her own,” Jay told Stomp.

He added that he grew up in an underprivileged family, with his mother being the sole breadwinner. Helping Allyson was his way of paying forward the kindness he received, he explained.

They happened to hear that Allyson watched one of their videos, prompting them to visit her stall.

“That day also happened to be my birthday, and instead of celebrating the usual way, we wanted to spend it giving back to the community. Supporting her stall felt like the right way to do it,” Jay added.

The TikTok video shows the pair walking along a common corridor, with Allyson leading the way while Jay pushes a carton of food behind her.

They hand the food out to multiple families, and the encounter ends with Allyson giving Jay a hug.

“Moments like this remind me why we do what we do,” Jay added.
